Salvador dali self portrait. On the occasion of the loan of a painting entitled Self-Portrait a small-format exhibition has been organized around this theme in Salvador Dalís oeuvre. The name refers to the French socialist magazine LHumanite to which Dali signed. Photo by WeegeeArthur Fellig.
In the background to the right of Dalí is part of the word LHumanitie. Perhaps like some of the butterflies which featured in many of his paintings Dali was undergoing metamorphosis in this piece sliding off his old skin and moving away from psychoanalysis. Dali described this as painting the glove instead of the soul.
Self-portrait with LHumanitie was painted while Dalí was at the Madrid Academy of Arts. The famous Austrian psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud had a great impact on the Surrealism and many works of the movement were inspired by his theoriesFreuds psychological view that ones fantasies shape their dreams and delusions fascinated Dali and became the pivot for his Surrealist work. Dali used the words anti-psychological to describe this particular self portrait.
From there Orson Welles narration tells us a bit about Dali as we are treated to various shots of Dalis art interspersed with moments of Dali acting goofy. Painted in 1941 the piece depicts a single piece of bacon beside an organic structureless shape adorned with a human face and propped up with crutches. Narrated by Orson Welles.
